  • Iker García Barrenetxea (1979) invites us to rediscover Donostia through a series of paintings that capture the light, color, and atmosphere of the city. Each piece is an emotional window into the lived landscape—an intimate and luminous interpretation of everyday scenes.

As the title suggests, the sea is ever-present: sometimes as a horizon, other times as a reflection or as a breeze suspended in the light. The Cantabrian Sea is not just a backdrop, but a constant presence that inspires, connects, and envelops each canvas with its shifting atmosphere, evoking the salty air that permeates the city.

The series engages in dialogue with influences such as Hopper, Turner, Magritte, Richter, Antonio López, Ameztoi, Fischl, Hockney, among others, and connects with the artist’s previous work on London. Two different cities, yet united by the same pictorial sensibility.

Donostia’s architecture also plays a leading role: the elegance of the Victoria Eugenia Theatre, the nostalgic railing of La Concha, the bridges, facades, and corners that the artist explores with a gaze that transforms the urban into emotion.
